Last week, I went on a behind the scenes tour of the PGA Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club. The preparation for this event is mind boggling with hundreds of volunteers running around. There were over 75 assistant superintendent and superintendent volunteers just for greens keeping and yet there was only one semi-volunteer for equipment maintenance. The course looked amazing. As part of the tour, I got to sit in on Director of Agronomy Charlie Aubry’s final meeting of the greens keeping volunteers before the start of the tournament. There was a lot of boiler plate in the meeting, telling everybody the schedule, what was expected from each group and what the weather expectations were. As Charlie was wrapping up, he wanted to thank his equipment maintenance crew; Chris, Kevin and Jeff. We had to wait a few minutes because Jeff was still working. When Charlie finally introduced them there was a spontaneous and extended standing ovation. In a word, it was … Glorious!
